Introduction

Over the past five years the global landscape for wine exports in bottles under 2 L has seen both consolidation among traditional powerhouses and rapid gains from smaller players. This narrative peels back the layers on key performers from 2019 through 2024 using export figures in USD$ FOB.

Total Exports Comparison (2019 vs 2024)

In 2019 total exports across all listed countries reached USD$24.67 billion. By 2024 that figure stood at USD$24.64 billion, a slight decrease of approximately 0.16%. This near-flat trend underscores how shifts among individual exporters have nearly balanced out at the global level.

Top 10 Exporters Overview

France and Italy remain clear leaders. Between 2019 and 2024:

  • France climbed from 6.76 billion to 7.64 billion, about a 13% gain.
  • Italy grew from 5.03 billion to 5.74 billion, roughly a 14% increase.

Several of the next eight in the ranking saw declines:

  • Spain dipped by about 8%, from 2.07 billion to 1.91 billion.
  • Australia fell nearly 17%, moving from 1.64 billion down to 1.36 billion.
  • Chile slipped by around 17%, from 1.60 billion to 1.32 billion.
  • The United States experienced an 11% drop, from 1.13 billion to 1.00 billion.

Portugal, Germany, New Zealand and Argentina also recorded moderate decreases over this period, each easing back roughly 2% to 15% of their 2019 levels.

Rising Stars Among Smaller Exporters

A handful of smaller markets have punched above their weight:

  • Belgium surged from 98 million in 2019 to 251 million in 2024, an increase of more than 150%.
  • The Netherlands climbed by about 40%, from 257 million to 358 million.
  • Georgia posted a near 25% rise, moving from 218 million to 271 million.

These emerging exporters have steadily expanded their footprint, even as some larger players lost ground.

Potential Data Gaps

A close look at the raw series suggests potential missing entries rather than pure decline:

  • China’s exports fell from 362 million in 2018 to just 29 million by 2024, hinting that figures for 2019 through 2024 may be incomplete.
  • Hong Kong saw erratic swings across the last five years that could reflect reporting gaps, particularly around 2022 to 2024.
